Guatemala’s a shockingly simple answer when it comes to affording an authentic indigenous experience. ♦ Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast

From the northern edge of Panama to the southern tip of Nicaragua, Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast shines. A total departure from the Caribbean Coast, the Pacific stretch is hugged by lush rainforests, blue-green waters, and stark shores. Costa Rica’s dramatically tropical climate often has people guessing when to go to Costa Rica, but don’t worry over it! Costa Rica’s Pacific coastline in April is a sweet spot of warm weather, minimal showers, and some of the world’s best beach activities. Tamarindo along the northern Pacific Coast is the epitome of laid-back beach lifestyle where you can surf, fish, and go horseback riding along its welcoming shores. For never-ending amounts of fresh, affordable seafood and quieter, untouched sand, the southern pacific coast’s deserted beaches provide a tropical sanctuary.

♦ Colombia’s Caribbean: Cartagena & Tayrona National Park

Colombia’s gorgeous Caribbean Coast has outgrown the dated clichés that once haunted the magnificent country. One of our favorite Caribbean vacation spots, Cartagena has fairytale streets that embrace visitors with romantic history and charm. The colonial port city, with its 16th century plazas, unforgettable seafood, and relatively low tourist impact is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Ambling down it’s allies below the balconies dripping in fragrant flowers will have you feeling as if you’ve uncovered a well kept secret. Just four hours away by car, the beloved Tayrona National Park lies along a pristine Caribbean coast. Its whimsical beaches are great for getting a surf in, or reading in one of the many beach-side hammocks available to rent. You can even ask your travel expert at Class Adventure Travel how to set up a hike through the enticing mountains nearby!

♦ Belize: Ambergris Caye & Cayo District

Belize is the best of both worlds when it comes to beach and mountain getaways. With flights from New York (and Los Angeles!) to Belize averaging just under 7 hours, its a quick and deserved vacation. Divers, snorkelers, and anyone who enjoys a fruity treat on the beach should sneak away to the snow-white sandy beaches of Ambergris Caye. Often called “paradise island,” this slice of tropical heaven is home to the planet’s second largest reef system, and some of the most extraordinary ocean views in the world.  To round out your Belize experience or just switch up your terrain, stop in the Cayo District of western Belize. Bordering Guatemala’s Maya region of El Petén, the Cayo shows off Belize’s expansive pinelands, Maya ruins, rolling rainforests, and cattle ranches – a one of a kind combination of remote and rugged beauty.

♦ Guatemala: Antigua, Tikal &  Lake Atitlán

Guatemala is a revelation when it comes to safely and affordably experiencing authentic indigenous culture. From the colonial streets of Antigua and towering Mayan temples of Tikal to the glistening waters of Lake Atitlán,; Guatemala has something truly extraordinary for every family member to enjoy.

Antigua’s cobblestone streets and volcanic surroundings are particularly enchanting in the spring as the city prepares for it’s world famous Semana Santa (Easter week). The UNESCO World Heritage Center transforms with colorful processions of intricately made textiles and art – a sight that, if you’re lucky enough to see, is sure to awaken all of your senses.

If it’s ancient history you’re after, the ancient Mayan citadel of Tikal is to the northern Guatemalan rainforests as the Inca Machu Picchu is to Peru. Nuzzled in dense greenery, the iconic Lost World Pyramid, Temple of the Jaguar, and Temple IV are beautifully preserved pre-Columbian treasures that will have you second-guessing the disappearance of their original peoples.

Continue the Mayan adventure with a tour to Guatemala’s most impressive landscape, Lake Atitlán. A tour across the unbelievably blue lake surrounded by volcanoes takes visitors to surrounding Maya villages where they can experience intricate Mayan traditions that have lasted the test of time.

The best part of Guatemala is that it’s only a five hour flight from Los Angeles! By saving all of that travel time, you might even want to add a short trip across the border to explore Belize’s Cayo District for jungles, caves, and unforgettable white sand beaches.

♦ Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast: Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio & the Osa Peninsula

Regardless of how old you are, nothing says “spring break” more than Costa Rica during dry season. The Pacific Coast is particularly spectacular at this time of year because it’s rugged shores and low hanging tropical forests are freshly green and full of otherworldly wildlife. For thrilling zip-lining adventures through canopies and relaxing on the pristine beaches, plan for these amazing Costa Rican destinations during the spring.

Never-ending golden sand beaches and some of the most impressive sunsets you’ll ever see make Tamarindo the perfect place to rest and relax. Nature-lovers will gush over a kayak trip through the Mangrove Wildlife Reserve, and how you can spot the occasional endangered Leatherback turtle through it’s crystal clear water.

Further along the central coast and just a few hours drive from the capital of San José, the white shores of Manual Antonio National Park echo the sounds of the jungle.  Monkeys, armadillos, and toucans are just some 109 mammal and 184 bird species you can find in Costa Rica’s smallest national park. Don’t be fooled by size though, action and adventure swing from every tree with the park’s renowned zip-lines.

If adventure to you means exploring something unexplored, the Osa Peninsula, often referred to as the “last wild frontier of Costa Rica,” will surely meet the challenge. The relatively untouched beaches, forests, and wide range of wildlife, gives visitors a glimpse into Costa Rica’s nature at its core. For a good adrenalin rush to send you home smiling, try a noctural walk through the jungle or a rappelling class down the region’s impressive waterfalls.

Latin America’s Best Hikes

John Muir said that in every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks,” and for hikers around the world nothing is sweeter than the journey through nature to a well-earned view.

From the peaks of Torres del Paine to the grottos of Chapada Diamantina, Latin America is overflowing with the world’s most captivating trails.

We invite beginners, experts, and everyone in between to follow us through valleys, deserts, jungles, and mountains, on our guide to Latin America’s best hikes. Get ready for a list that will leave you ready to find your perfect view!

Cocora Valley, Colombia

Glacier Mini-Trekking, El Calafate, Argentina

Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park is home to 47 astounding glaciers and one of Class Adventure Travel’s favorite hiking excursions. Mini-trekking on the surface of Perito Moreno feels like walking across the surface of an icy moon.

Barren, daunting, and beautiful, your group will explore one of the world’s most treasured landmarks as if you’re finding it for the first time.

After a panoramic view of the glacier from the Magallanes Peninsula, a boat across Lake Rico gives passengers front row seats to the booms and splashes of ice crashing into the lake and brings them to Moreno’s shore. With the help of a guide, trekkers slip into crampons and mount the ice itself, stopping to stare at its jaw-dropping crevices.

♦ Las Torres Ascencio Path, Torres del Paine, Chile

The looming peaks and winding trails of Torres del Paine, sometimes called “the 8th wonder of the world,” are nothing short of a hiker’s dream. Though many skilled alpinists visit the park for the famous W-Circuit, our favorite Torres del Paine trail is the Las Torres Ascencio path.

Thick forests, steep ascents, and strong Patagonian winds challenge hikers on Ascencio’s course, making the breathtaking views at the base of the Towers, (and the lunch break) all the more worth it.

The UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve has hikes for everyone from beginner to expert and is one of the most unforgettable places to appreciate Patagonia’s iconic spires.

Chapada Diamantina National Park, Brazil

The 586 sq. miles of inland beauty in Brazil’s Chapada Diamantina National Park are a departure from the icy towers of Argentina and Chile. Teeming with dramatic plateaus, colossal waterfalls, and mysterious caves, the park is a playground for hikers eager to venture above and below ground.

Trekkers can seek out the illusions of the Cachoeira da Fumaça waterfall or an impressive sunset over the tabletop mountains from the summit of Morro do Pai Inácio.

Regardless of your choice, a dip into Poço Encantado, a 120ft. deep pool of water so clear that rock roots are visible to the naked eye, is by far one of the most refreshing places in the world to cool off.

Hiking through Cocora Valley, Colombia

Prized for its world-renowned coffee farms, Colombia’s Cocora Valley has magic in the heart of it’s jungle. We recommend starting your day with a steaming cup of coffee and hitting one of the valley’s many trails.

Snaking their way through the greenery, the paths of Cocora reveal endangered flora and fauna, whimsical wax palms waving at over 200 ft. in the air, and the calls of 1800 different species of birds.

The Valley sleepily welcomes hikers who want to revel in a verdurous jungle filled with unending vistas and the region’s aromatic coffee.

Nocturnal Nature Hike in Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Hugged by secluded beaches and unspoiled rainforest, the El Remanso Lodge in Costa Rica’s opulent Osa Peninsula is where hikers can uncover the world of the rainforest at night.

El Remanso’s seasoned guides focus the group’s attention on the forest floor, where vibrant amphibians, insects, and reptiles, often overlooked during the day, command the forest.

The hike is an intense and thrilling sensory experience where visitors will soak in the sounds and sights of the forest at night, and is by far one of the rarest ways to experience the whole of Costa Rica‘s abundant wildlife.

The Trails to Machu Picchu, Peru

Sewn in the seams of the Andes, the ancient Inca Citadel at Machu Picchu is so imperative to global heritage that it was chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of The World.

Luckily for travelers, the monumental landmark is within reach for those who are willing to do a little (okay, a lot) of hiking.

The Inca Trail is the most popular way to reach the ruins, but because the epic undertaking of four days has a worldwide reputation, it’s not uncommon for it to be booked up to six months in advance. If you can’t get a spot on the Trail or fancy a different route to the ruins, the Salkantay or Lares Trails, and paths to Huayna Picchu and Wayna Picchu mountains, are surefire ways to immerse yourself in the spirit of ancient culture and beauty.

Best Family-Friendly Destinations in Latin America

The idea of planning a family adventure to Latin America can be daunting when considering the incredible variety of sights and activities the beautiful continent has to offer.

Not to worry, whether it’s experiencing wildlife and nature preserves first hand, traveling back in time to revisit ancient history or partaking in excursions that you want, there is something for every family in Latin America.

From trekking on Argentina’s glaciers to zip-lining through Costa Rica‘s rainforest, we’ve chosen our favorite family-friendly destinations in Latin America to get you started on your way.

Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina

Los Glaciares National Park

Walk along Patagonia’s awe-inspiring glaciers

The Patagonian glaciers in the South of Argentina are some of nature’s most impressive achievements, and for families seeking a hands-on adventure, a trip to the Los Glaciares National Park is not to be missed. A mini-trekking tour of the Perito Moreno Glacier gives visitors the chance to see the massive ice formation from afar during a walk along the Magallanes Peninsula before they strap on crampons and follow a professional guide on a tour of the icy surface itself. Due to the rigorous nature of the mini-trekking experience, we recommend family members be between the ages of 10 and 65

The sail back to land across Lake Rico finishes the day with the incredible sights and sounds of glacier pieces crashing into the water (an experience you’ll surely want a camera for).

If traversing ice isn’t for you, an equally amazing alternative is a visit to Estancia Cristina where a cruise along Lake Argentino will get you an unforgettable seat in front of icebergs and one of Patagonia’s largest and most treasured glaciers, Upsala. The estancia, wrapped in the typical Patagonian landscape, is a peek at what it’s like to live amidst the glaciers in the majestic Los Glaciares National Park. Though the park is a white wonderland year-round, the coolest temperatures set in from June to September before warming up again for the longer summer days of December to February

Go back in time to Guatemalas “Lost City”

For families excited at the idea of traveling in space and time, a visit to Guatemala’s mystical Tikal National Park transports guests through a thick green jungle to the heart of ancient Mayan culture.

The park, which is also a UNESCO site of Human Patrimony, is the largest existing Mayan city where archaeologists believe the Maya settled around 900 BCE.

A walking tour through the five main temples of Tikal provide visitors with the daunting beauty of the surrounding jungle and an in depth explanation of how the very palaces and temples they stand before became the Mayan center for commerce, culture, and ceremony. Don’t worry about the weather, Guatemala’s mild climate makes it easy to visit all year long, and though the winter months are rainier than others, downpours end quickly and should not interrupt your stay. If you have more time and are eager to dig deeper into Mayan history we recommend exploring the rest of Guatemala’s Peten region with visits to the Ruins of Yaxha, Flores Island, or simply hiking in the jungle to see the ruins from stunning viewpoints. No matter what you choose, including Guatemala in your trip is an unbelievable way to experience Mayan culture like no other place in the world.

Play with the world famous wildlife on the Galápagos Islands

Natural scientist Charles Darwin was so impressed with the variations in endemic species he found in the Galápagos Islands that he used them to develop his theories on natural selection and evolution.

For wildlife enthusiasts and explorers alike, a trip to these islands is an opportunity to see and be a part of one of the world’s most valued ecological reserves (not to mention the chance to interact with the incredible variety of species unique to these islands!).

The natural archipelago was formed between 3 and 10 million years ago when volcanic activity split the earth’s surface open and now the islands rest peacefully off the western coast of Ecuador as a national park, biological marine reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Dry season is from June to December and wet is from January to May but because of the archipelago’s position along the equator, visitors are welcomed by warm weather all year. Instead of planning your trip around wet vs. dry, we suggest checking out this guide to see when your favorite wildlife will be out and active. Whether watching green turtles lay their eggs in January or playing with sea lion pups while snorkeling in November, there’s no doubt that a trip to the Galápagos will fascinate families with its beauty and bustling wildlife.

Pioneer a new travel experience in enchanting Cartagena

Cartagena is a colonial port city nestled into Colombia’s Caribbean coast filled with colorful cobblestone streets, 16th century history plazas, and flavorful seafood, making it an ideal destination for families hoping for a leisurely tropical vacation. As if the enchanting atmosphere isn’t alluring enough, visiting Cartagena offers guests a rare chance to encounter what feels like a relatively “unexplored land” because, despite it being well connected to international and domestic airports, the town charmingly lacks an international tourist presence.

Cartagena’s consistently warm and humid climate make it a great place to visit all year, though it can get hot during the middle of the day for which we recommend packing lightly and taking afternoon swims.

Time can be passed easily by exploring the cathedral or iconic clock tower in the city center (which also happens to be UNESCO World Heritage Site) or taking a day trip to the Rosario Islands which, just off the coast of Cartagena’s white beaches, give everyone from beginners to experts the good fortune to snorkel in the dazzling reef. The flower-packed balconies, lunches of freshly caught fish, plantains and coconut rice, and unforgettably azure water are sure to sweep every adventure seeking and lounge loving member of the family off their feet.

Zip-line above Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano

Few places offer thrill seekers the opportunity to explore the rainforest like the northern lowlands of Costa Rica do. Home to some of the world’s most magnificent cloud forests, pastures, and wetlands, a visit to the Arenal Volcano National Park and nearby town of La Fortuna is an impeccable choice for families who want walk alongside monkeys one day and swing through the greenery like them the next.

After parents enjoy a smooth cup of Costa Rican coffee in the morning the whole family can get an exclusive bird’s-eye view of the park’s dormant volcano while zip-lining through the treetops or exploring the diverse ecosystem of the Hanging Gardens by foot.

Those who can’t get enough of the adventure might want to challenge themselves with a hike down to the Cataratas de La Fortuna’s cascading waterfalls or an encounter with Sabanero (Costa Rican Cowboy) culture on a horse ride along the Don Tobias trail. Perhaps after all of your adventure heavy activities, we recommend sitting back and enjoying the lush scenery with a dip into La Fortuna’s natural hot springs. Weather patterns for the Northern Plains can be tricky and guests will have luck with unrestricted views of Arenal’s volcano from February to April, which are the hottest, driest and busiest months of the year. Like with many other family friendly destinations, you shouldn’t count out the rainier season from June to mid-November as the rain brings the forest alive to its fullest color. The shoulder months to the dry and wet seasons from May to June are also great times to visit, with small chances of precipitation that provide fresh, clear air.
