This fascinating walking tour will help you gain a little insight into the local Limeño culture and history. After being picked up from your hotel at 9 am, the taxi will take you to the Miraflores market, where Peruvian merchants will enlighten you on the local produce and outline the different types of potatoes, corn, and fruits that can be found in Peru. DAY 9 - AREQUIPA TO CHIVAY

INTO THE COLCA CANYON

After an early breakfast in Arequipa, today involves traveling almost 100 miles where your journey will take you up a further 6562 ft. above sea level. As you leave Arequipa, it won’t be long before you get an idea of the range of landscapes ahead of you. The huge El Misti Volcano, flanked by the third largest volcano, the Chachani Volcano and the Pichu Pichu Volcano is quite the leaving party as you bid farewell to the White City.

The beginning of the journey to the Colca Canyon is dotted with small traditional villages where you can see the brightly colored clothing typical of this region. The road then keeps going up and up and up some more! You’ll stop for a short break at a traditional Andean community where we recommend that you drink some mate de coca (tea made with coca leaves) that helps to fight the symptoms of altitude sickness. Entering the altiplano, you will be treated to views of serene lakes with migrant birds and llamas, alpacas, guanacos, and vicuñas wandering through the Peruvian Andes. After this amazing trip, you will arrive in the friendly town of Chivay where you can have lunch, buy some snacks and drinks and walk around a bit before going on to the hotel. Due to the altitude of Chivay at almost 12,000ft. above sea level, it’s important that you drink a lot of water and take it easy. Luckily for you, the beautiful scenery and fresh air make just sitting on a rock and admiring your surroundings an enjoyable activity in itself. You’ll soon arrive at your accommodation where the rest of the afternoon and evening is free to spend at your leisure.

Included: Transportation from Arequipa to Chivay with a guide; Accommodation in Colca Canyon. (Meals – Breakfast).

Day 10 - CHIVAY

EXPLORING COLCA CANYON

Leaving early in the morning, you’ll head to the famous El Mirador (The Lookout) at Cruz del Condor. Situated high on a cliff at the deepest point of the canyon, which in itself is cavernous and is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States, the Cruz del Condor offers fantastic views of both the canyon and the immense Andean Condors flying over the abyss below. With the largest wingspan of any land bird as well as being one of the world’s longest-living birds, the Incas believed the Andean Condors to be immortal. The Condors are generally at their most active in the morning, so the earlier you get there, the more likely you are to see them and have this magical moment to yourself with fewer people around.

On the way back to your accommodation in the Colca Canyon, you will stop off at the traditional village of Pinchollo and the Andean community of Maca where you will be able to explore some of the local handicrafts and soak up some more valley views. You will then continue along the winding roads before reaching the small village of Yanque which has one of the most beautiful churches in all of the Colca Valley. Arriving at your accommodation, the rest of the day is free to spend at your leisure where you can take advantage of optional tours or make your own way to some of the natural hot springs in the area. If you are looking for the adventure to continue you can spend the afternoon hiking with a guide down into the canyon itself (if you feel fit enough). There is a lot of agricultural activity on the terraced working grounds and the views of farmers working in the fields, with the canyon mountains in the background, are unforgettable.

Included: Transport with a guide to the Cruz del Condor, Colca Canyon entrance fee; Accommodation in Colca. (Meals – Breakfast).

DAY 16 - CUSCO TO SACRED VALLEY

Full day in the Sacred Valley

After being picked up from your hotel your tour will start with a brief pit stop at the Mirador de Qorao or Awanacancha before heading up to Pisac. A famed hill town, Pisac is a great place to purchase top quality Andean knitwear at lower prices than you will find in major cities during your trip to Peru. Woven blankets, tapestries, and alpaca garments such as sweaters and mittens, colorful fabric, and accessories are found in abundance at the Pisac market in addition to pottery, jewelry, and other handicrafts. Then, you will visit the archaeological site of Pisac. You will go to the ‘Tanqanamarca Cemetery’, where existed an estimated 10000 burials and to the ‘Qantusraqay neighborhood’ area, for farmers. It is composed of rustic stone buildings built on the edges of the cliffs. Afterward, you will go for a buffet lunch in the Sacred Valley, set in extensive gardens with beautiful views across the Valley. Then, you continue to an attractive little town located at the western end of the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo. The town has been built on top of original Inca foundations and is the best surviving example of Inca town planning.

The temple area is at the top of steep terracing which helped to provide excellent defenses. The stone used for these buildings was brought from a quarry high up on the opposite side of the Urubamba River – an incredible feat involving the efforts of thousands of workers.

LEISURE DAY / OPTIONAL: MARAS & MORAY

Day at leisure to take our optional tour: Moray and Salineras

This excursion will allow you to discover and explore the wonderful Incan sites of Moray and Maras. At Moray, you can see pre-Inca and Inca ruins, mostly consisting of several enormous circular depressions potentially used as agricultural terraces, with a complex system of irrigation. The site with the Quechua name “muyus” is the deepest pit, with a depth of 30m (100ft). These ruins are remnants of the Inca age; they seem to have been some sort of agricultural experimentation center in which the Incas re-created microclimates on every terrace. From Moray, you will head towards Maras, where you will find the ‘Salineras’, a wonder of hydraulic engineering and a must for photographers. The saltpans are set on overhanging cliffs and command spectacular views of the Andean mountains and the Urubamba River below. Hidden behind several layers of lush green mountains, these snow-white salt pans will stun you with their beauty, as they reflect the sun like white gold.

Included: Accommodation in Sacred Valley. (Meals – Breakfast).

Dear CAT, Thanks so much for an incredible time in Peru. The service that you provided during our private tour was amazing. The guides were knowledgeable, the hotels were above the level we expected and everything that was included was more than we could have imagined. We loved traveling along the coast and of course Machu Picchu was a greater highlight than any pictures can do justice. Sincerely, David and Apryl Imboden, Orange, CA

Sarah, The vacation to Brazil and Peru was great! All of the guides were good, but Luiz and Fernando were exceptional! Both of them went out of their way to accommodate us and make our trip special. Pascuale was also very good, he certainly knows his way around Machu Picchu. I would recommend this trip to anyone! The hotels were wonderful as well. We even enjoyed the Andean Wings. I found the staff to be welcoming and the hotel quaint. The Sonesta Posada was a real stand out. Thanks again for your help in putting everything together. We had a great time! Angela

Dear CAT Travel, We had a most wonderful time in Argentina. Working with Marcos was a real joy.  He proved to be very helpful and knowledgeable about his product and services.  All the transfers were executed punctually with friendly and professional staff.  The tours for the most part were excellent, depending on the guide, their overall knowledge, delivery and fluency in the English language. The hotels were all very clean, comfortable, and for the most part in good locations in respect to the center of town.  I can honestly say that it was a once in a lifetime trip and our best travel experience. It is a really wonderful travel destination, we loved, loved, loved Argentina! Annalena Burbridge
