DAY 1 - LIMA

ARRIVAL TO PERU'S CAPITAL

Lima may be the political capital of Peru, but when it comes to gastronomy, it is one of the capitals of the world! Food is certainly going to be a theme during your stay in Lima that’s for sure. On arrival in this culinary paradise, your private guide will be waiting at the airport to transfer you to the hotel for check-in.

DAY 2 - LIMA

LIMA LIKE A LOCAL

Day two has a fascinating walking tour in store for you which will help you gain a little insight into the local Limeño culture and history. After being picked up from your hotel at 9 am, the taxi will take you to the Miraflores market, where Peruvian merchants will enlighten you on the local produce and outline the different types of potatoes, corn, and fruits that can be found in Peru. Feel free to grab some samples and don’t forget to try the coca leaves! Following a short meander through the market, you will then hop on the public bus ‘Metropolitano’ to the historic center, where you can admire grand colonial buildings.

The Historic Center of Lima has been the seat of the Colonial and Republican governments since the Spanish foundation of the city in 1535 and is also an important indigenous center. Until the 1940s, it also housed Peru’s richest and most influential families. As you stroll through the city center, pay attention to the changing style of architecture and the beautiful interior balconies. Upon arriving in Plaza San Martin, you will taste some delicious Peruvian pastries before heading to the main square. There, you will stop by a small outlet of the ChocoMuseum and will receive fun facts and information about the process of transforming the cocoa bean into the delicious chocolate that you will be savoring.

Following this tasty treat, the tour will proceed to the Cordano Bar, where you will taste a typical Peruvian drink, the Chicha Morada, made from sweet purple corn. From here, you can either grab the Metropolitano bus back to Miraflores or you are welcome to stay in the historic center to continue exploring on your own terms.

DAY 3 - LIMA TO CUSCO/SACRED VALLEY

ARRIVAL TO THE SACRED VALLEY

Day three of exploiting the best of Peru starts off with a private transfer to the airport. Take in a full-day excursion to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, alongside the Vilcanota River, where you will find native communities, impressive terraces, and many important archaeological sites. In this tour, you will visit the Pisac Indian Market, one of the most popular and picturesque of the indigenous markets in the Cusco region.

Travelers from all over the world come to purchase all manner of textiles, ceramics, jewelry, ponchos, rugs, hats, gloves, Andean instruments, ceramics. Alpaca and llama wool is woven into clothing and there are a host of lovely souvenirs. And although you can visit it every day, the Sunday market is magnificent, mass is celebrated in Quechua and the worthy “varayoc” (local authorities) attendance adds enrichment to the celebration.

Your tour will continue to the Pisac ruins, perched magnificently at the entrance to a great gorge, the citadel looks over the Urubamba Valley and the town of Pisac from above. Pisac was situated strategically along a road that connected the Inca Empire with the jungles of the east. The site is an impressive reminder of just how advanced the civilization was in terms of building and agriculture.

Afterward, you will make a stop for lunch and in the afternoon you will visit the Inca town of Ollantaytambo, which has original Inca houses, streets, and the fortress towering above the village. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel.

DAY 4 - SACRED VALLEY

MARAS & MORAY TREKKING & OLLANTAYTAMBO

You will be picked up from your hotel in the Sacred Valley, then transferred to one of the most unique places in the Sacred Valley called Moray. Here you will discover how the Incas used the huge natural voids within the earth’s surface to build irrigated farming terraces. Be amazed by these natural formations and how nature has created different environmental conditions (also known as microclimates), which are replicated in greenhouses nowadays because of their favorable environments.

After visiting this incredible place, you will start hiking to Maras salt flats where you will learn all about this incredible destination and the process to extract the salt which is becoming famous around the world. After this, you will continue hiking to Pichingoto, where the vehicle will be waiting to take you to Ollantaytambo fortress. There your guide will explain about this wonderful place. DAY 5 - SACRED VALLEY TO MACHU PICCHU

TRAIN TO MACHU PICCHU

After breakfast, your private transfer will pick you up from your accommodation in the Sacred Valley and take you to the Inca town of Ollantaytambo. We recommend exploring the beautiful cobblestone streets, the colorful textiles, and charming cafes before your train leaves for Machu Picchu. Boarding your train from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes shaves 2 hours off what normally is a 4-hour journey from Cusco, beginning at the most beautiful part of the stretch, leaving from Ollantaytambo.

Arriving at your hotel of choice in Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu, we recommend that you spend a few hours exploring this quaint little town, connected to the world by train. Situated in a deep gorge below Machu Picchu the charm of Aguas Calientes scattered in its cobblestone streets lined by small local restaurants and shops, enclosed by steep cliffs, a misty cloud forest, and two rushing rivers. We suggest having an early dinner tonight as tomorrow you will have an early start going to Machu Picchu at sunrise.

DAY 6 - MACHU PICCHU TO CUSCO

THE MYSTERY OF MACHU PICCHU

The citadel of Machu Picchu is by far the most important tourist attraction in the Sacred Valley. Discovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham, this stronghold, overlooking the deep canyon of the Urubamba River, is considered to be one of the most extraordinary examples of landscape architecture in the world. In ancient times, when the Inca was considered to be a descendant of God, this fortress was considered his palace above the clouds, where only the chosen ones could live.

Every trip to Peru should include this destination and World Wonder. In Aguas Calientes, you’ll board a bus for a 20-minute ride to the sanctuary of Machu Picchu, where you’ll have a guided tour to explore this magnificent sample of Inca architectural perfection. After an extensive visit to this magical place, you will have some free time to take some pictures before taking the bus back down to Aguas Calientes.

Taking the train from Aguas Calientes you’ll head through the dramatic landscape of the Sacred Valley until you reach Cusco. Having acclimatized to the altitude the last few days, Cusco’s altitude (11,150ft. above sea level) should be no problem at all at this point, allowing you to really get out and enjoy the town this evening, or get some rest at one of our lovely boutique hotels in the area. DAY 7 - CUSCO

CUSCO LIKE A LOCAL

Walk around the Imperial City of the Incas, starting at the local market of Cusco, where you will experience a bit of Peruvian Culture and daily Cusqueño life. In the market, you can find the best variety of vegetables, bread, and fruits in the country. Continuing this pleasant walk you’ll visit the impressive Colonial Cathedral in Cusco containing over 400 paintings from the Cusqueña School and several beautiful altars.

Afterward, you’ll visit Koricancha, which is considered a religious center of Cusco, geographically and politically. The Temple of Koricancha, was where the Inca paid homage to the Sun god called Inti. Qori means goldwork and Kancha means an enclosed space, bounded by walls. Then you’ll walk uphill a bit to enter the artisan quarter of San Blas, where you’ll be able to appreciate a religious painting and many workshops where, if they are available, you can watch artisans in action. After this, you’ll return to your hotel.

DAY 8 - Cusco to Lake Titicaca

The Altiplano and Lake Titicaca

Private transfer from your hotel to the bus station. Leaving Cusco, the Capital of the Inca Empire behind, you’ll start your journey by a comfortable touristic bus to Puno. The drive is approximately 10 hours long and you’ll stop off along the route at some of the most beautiful and authentic locations. Stopping at the charming 16th Century village has a beautiful Main Square with the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas; the pride of the town and its people. It is one of the most beautiful Baroque churches built under Spanish influence in the Americas and is often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of the Americas.

Following your tour of Andahuaylillas which will last around 25 minutes you’ll board the touristic bus and head towards your next stop, the fascinating archaeological complex of Raqchi. Stare in amazement at the monumental size of Raqchi and its temple, which has walls reaching up to 49ft (15m) and is unique in the Inca Empire. The tour of Raqchi lasts for around 40 minutes and then you’ll board the tourist bus and head towards your next stop at La Raya. At 14,222ft (4,335m) above sea level, this marks the highest point of the route and is here where the Vilcanota River otherwise known as, the Sacred River of the Inca is born and flows down through the mountains before joining the Amazon River. The tour lasts around 10 minutes before continuing to the last stop before arriving at Puno, Pukara.

Once the great pre-Hispanic city of Pukara, characterized by its huge pyramids, you’ll visit the lytic Museum where several artifacts of this period can be admired. The village is also known for its traditional ceramics known as Torito de Pukara. Your tour of Pukara will last for about 35 minutes before the touristic bus will take you to the final destination of Puno on the shore of Lake Titicaca. You’ll then arrive in Puno and take a private transfer to your hotel.

DAY 9 - LAKE TITICACA TO LA PAZ

Sun Island Catamaran on Titicaca

Early in the morning, you will be transferred to Copacabana, the main town on the shore of Lake Titicaca, recognized for its famous Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana, where the Virgin of Copacabana is housed.

A short visit to the Cathedral and Main Square will be done before boarding the Catamaran and sailing to Sun Island. The Island inhabitants are indigenous people of Quechua origin mostly, whose main sources of income are tourism, agriculture, and cattle herding. Considered to be a sacred place for the Incas, here you will find the Archaeological remains of Pilkokaina (Templo de Pilcocaina), the Youth’s fountain, it is believed that its water gives eternal youth and the famous 500 Inca stairs.

You will also visit the Ekako Underground Museum, the Titikaka Reed Shipbuilders display center, the Pachamama agricultural Inca terraces, a handicraft center, and the Intica lounge. You will have a unique sailing experience aboard a huge Titikaka traditional vessel for a panoramic visit to the Pilkokaina Inca Palace. You will then cruise back while a buffet lunch is served on board. Upon arrival, you will overland to La Paz city.

DAY 10 - LA PAZ

LA PAZ LIKE A LOCAL

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up from your hotel and will transfer you to the Cable Car Station. You will take the Cable Car, which has probably the best views of the central and northern side of La Paz City, followed by an interesting walk along local streets and colorful markets.

You will visit different galleries of Bolivian Traditional customs and get to know a bit more about the typical lady of the highlands, ‘Chola’, in their different daily activities. You will continue to the main square of La Paz in order to try a delicious Bolivian Empanadas called ‘Salteña’ and a delicious Bolivian hot juice. The tour ends dropping you off at your hotel, or please request your guide to leave you at the center if you want to stroll around on your own.

DAY 11 - La Paz to Uyuni

Exploring the Salt Lakes

On day eleven you’ll get a private transfer to the airport to take your flight towards Uyuni.

For Comfort and Superior Class: You will depart from Uyuni at 10.30 am in 4×4 vehicles. Your trip starts with the train cemetery visit, where you’ll find nineteenth-century locomotives, and the Colchani village, to see salt handicrafts and small factories where salt is processed. You’ll continue towards the Salar where you’ll find salt piles, waterholes, and the old Salt Hotel (Hotel de Sal). The next stop will be the Incahuasi Island where you’ll do a short hike to see the giant cactus and spectacular viewpoints to the salt flats, then you’ll continue towards San Juan village where you will spend the night.

For Luxury Class: You will be met in Uyuni and will depart at 10 am on this unforgettable experience towards the town of Villamar. On the way, you will visit the train cemetery, where you can see the remains of the locomotives of the 19th and 20th centuries. Later, you will visit the church of San Cristobal and the towns of Culpina K and Alota, as well as the Valley of Rocks, a famous group of rock formations caused by wind erosion. You will continue with the visit to Catal and Vinto lagoons. In the afternoon, you will arrive at the village of Villamar and visit the Cave Paintings and the Tomas Lakjas Necropolis’ Fort.

Note: Due to the weather and road conditions the routes and hotel reservations can sometimes be changed without notice. For this reason, the itinerary is only for reference and is not to be taken as an exact itinerary of what this tour implies. Rain, snow, ice, and strong winds for example can cause some parts of the route to be temporarily impassable and may force us to make changes in the itinerary.

Rainy season: the rainy/wet season is roughly from January to April (subject to change). During this period parts of the Uyuni Salt Flats may be covered with water. It’s still possible to do the trip, to visit the Uyuni Salt Flats and the beautiful lagoons, the highlights of the trip for most people. However, with water on the Salar, you cannot cross it for hours like in the dry season and you generally cannot get to Isla Incahuasi / Fish Island. If this activity is one of the main reasons you’re taking our Bolivia, Peru tour, we suggest you stay away from visiting during the rainy season.

DAY 12 - UYUNI SALT FLATS

Colourful Lagoons of the Salar

For Comfort and Superior Class: At 8 am you’ll start the day going to the Chiguana Salar, the Ollague Volcano viewpoint, and the Cañapa, Hedionda, and Chiarcota lagoons, located at 4300 meters above sea level. This is where you will observe flamingos, vicunas, and other animals. You’ll continue visiting the Siloli desert, the Rock tree (Arbol de Piedra), and the Red-colored lagoon (Laguna Colorada) before arriving at your accommodation.

The trip continues to the ‘Sol de Mañana’ geysers to admire the spectacular colors of the hot mud. You will continue heading north and visiting the Siloli Desert and the Stone Tree, as well as the smaller lagoons circuit: Hedionda, Cañapa, Ramaditas, Chiar Khota, and Honda. Afterward, you will start your trip back to the town of Colchani, where you will spend the night.

DAY 13 - UYUNI

RETURN TO UYUNI

For Comfort and Superior Class: Today you will depart early in the morning, at 5 am, to visit the Geysers or active volcanoes of Sol de Mañana located at an altitude of 4.900 meters, where you can observe the ‘fumaroles’ or boiling lava at a temperature of 90C°. Continuing with the trip you will arrive at the Polques hot springs, where you can take a hot bath. Afterward, you will pass through the Dali desert to later visit the Green and White lagoons located at the foot of the Licancabur volcano. After this last visit, you will begin the return trip to the city of Uyuni, an approximate journey of 7 hours without stops, except at noon for lunch and the visit to the Rocks Valley in the sector of Villamar. You will arrive in Uyuni at 5 pm approx.

You will continue to Incahuasi Island (also known as Fish Island), where you will have the chance to observe the famous giant Cactus. The trip continues to the north, to the skirts of the Tunupa Volcano, to visit the Pucara Ayque, where you will observe the pre-Columbian fort and the mummies. Lunch will be served in the middle of the Salar and, after watching the dazzling sunset at the salt flats’ shore, you will be transferred to Uyuni to continue with your planned itinerary.

DAY 14 - UYUNI TO SUCRE

TRAVELING TO SUCRE

After breakfast, you’ll be taken by private transfer to Sucre with a stop in Potosí. At a height of over 4,000 meters, Potosí, the capital of the Bolivian state of the same name, is one of the highest cities in the world. But even an elevation as high as this does not stop the nearby Cerro Potosí from dominating the surrounding landscape. Also known as Cerro Rico (Spanish for Rich Mountain), the peak’s huge supply of silver has led to both immense riches and appalling suffering.

After this stop, we will continue towards your accommodation in Sucre. Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia and the 6th most populated city in Bolivia. Located in the south-central part of the country, Sucre lies at an elevation of 2,810 meters. This relatively high altitude gives the city a subtropical highland climate with cool temperatures year-round. Its pre-Columbian name was Chuquisaca; during the Spanish Empire, it was called La Plata.

The Colonial white city of Sucre, among the most beautiful cities in Latin America, is a popular destination because of its pristine colonial architecture, mild climate, and rich history. But very few people know that Sucre is Bolivia’s main producer of chocolate and hats (Sombreros).

You will be picked up from your hotel but before you visit the Hat Factory you will visit the local Indian Market. The Market is a huge area where the local people – the rich and the poor – do real shopping and sales. More than 100 street blocks of things you probably never thought you could buy anywhere. From truckloads of tropical fruits from the Jungle, coca leaves, witchcraft items to second-hand articles, and antiques. Colorful and buzzing with activities, trading like only the Bolivian Indians in their beautiful indigenous outfits can do!

Later on, you will arrive at the main Hat Factory of Bolivia where your guide will take you through the amazing scenery of old and hot steaming machines that look like they were stolen directly from an old Hollywood movie! Experience the process where extremely hard-working people are making basic designs for hats that will be exported to half of South America, the USA, and Europe. In the end, you will see the final products in all the colorful models for man and woman and you can even buy your own for less than 10 euros! There are hundreds of different models and sizes to pick from.

In this excursion, you will visit the Main Square (Plaza 25 de Mayo), the buildings that surround it including the House of Liberty and the Metropolitan Cathedral. The Indigenous Textile Museum, ASUR, where you can see all kinds of weavings of different Bolivian cultures. And La Recoleta, which is where the city was founded. It is also the highest part of the city providing a wonderful view.

DAY 16 - SUCRE TO SANTA CRUZ

TRAVELING TO SANTA CRUZ

After breakfast, you’ll be taken via private transfer to the airport to take a flight towards Santa Cruz. You’ll arrive in Santa Cruz and be taken via private transfer to your hotel.

Upon arrival, you can do a short hike or have a refreshing plunge in the waters of the waterfall that is located directly next to the lodge. After lunch, you will make your choice where to go, the hiking time varies from one to seven hours. After a hike, you can refresh yourself in the waterfall or enjoy the area from a reclining chair or a hammock. In the lodge, there are some books available about the flora and fauna of the area that will keep you occupied for the rest of the day.

RETURN TO LA PAZ

You can choose to do some of the amazing trails that surround the lodge or simply stay and enjoy nature. After lunch you will start your trip to Santa Cruz, arriving around 6 pm to your hotel. You’ll transfer from Refugio Los Volcanes to Santa Cruz Airport to take your flight back home.
