Carnival in Rio de Janeiro

Rio Carnival: The Greatest Show on Earth

The Rio Carnival is without a doubt the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ with more than 2 million people on any one day celebrating this extravagant and colorful party. With the official celebrations lasting for 5 days but the build up and after party lasting for the best part of 2-3 months, Rio’s Carnival is a once in a lifetime experience. The main event takes place in the vast, purpose-built Carnival stadium of the Sambadrome which when packed to capacity holds up to 90,000 travelers and Cariocas (locals from Rio). With the top 12 samba schools taking part, the spectacle lasts for about 6 to 8 hours with the 2,300 foot-long open air runway flanked by spectators, marveling at the beautiful floats and samba dancers with their bright plumes. As well as the Sambadrome, you can soak up the Carnival atmosphere on Rio’s best beaches, join a street parade known as a ‘bloco’, watch Rio’s best Samba schools in rehearsal or go to the exclusive Magic Ball at the luxurious Copacabana Palace. With all this entertainment, make sure to set some time aside to explore this ‘Marvelous City’ set among the jungle-covered mountains, idyllic golden beaches and of course, its fine museums and world famous landmarks.
