Less than 100km north of Salvador de Bahia will you find another one of the state’s coastal gems, a small, relaxed fishing village called Praia do Forte. This scenic, quaint coastal enclave takes its name from the defensive fort that was built on the beach by the Portuguese in 1556, and is now a popular retreat for those looking for some quintessential beach time. This white sandy beach, green fringes of palm trees and the blue waters of the Atlantic beyond it are the very essence of a tropical paradise, and the laid-back atmosphere of the area makes a welcome change from the energetic pace of Salvador, which is just two hours away by car. Often cited as one of the Brazilian northeast’s best beaches, Praia do Forte is a unique mix of seaside town and holiday destination, owing to the area’s many hotels and all inclusive resorts further inland, which are contrasted with smaller lodgings and pousadas closer to the beach. The beach itself is calm and tranquil, the waves breaking further out to sea where an offshore reefs calms the Atlantic waves before they hit the shore, allowing the shallow waters at the beaches’ edge to soak up the sun, creating a warm pool to bathe in.
A trip to Praia do Forte will often originate in Salvador de Bahia, so it is best to take advantage of both of these destinations by planning your trip in the summer months from December to March, when lots of festivities and celebrations take place. Summer is also when you can spot baby turtles hatching on the beach, an incredible natural spectacle. If you want to see the humpback whales, visit between July and October when they are easily spotted off the coast. New Year and Carnaval in February/March are the busiest times, and the rains are heaviest in April and May. Temperatures on Praia do Forte rarely drop below 25˚C during the day.
Praia do Forte is easily accessed by bus from Salvador, and the trip takes just under two hours. It is closer to Salvador’s airport, which is about an hour away. Praia do Forte has a wide range of international cuisine, with a number of creperies and pizzerias dishing up some tasty beachside food. Seafood is also a staple on many menus, and the quality is very good as it is sourced locally. Shoppers will be pleased with Praia do Forte’s many boutiques and souvenir shops. There are plenty of places to stay, and the area has a number of luxury resorts if you are planning a special occasion at the beach. There is also a developed tourism infrastructure which caters to those looking to do daytime activities such as horseriding, surfing and paragliding.
