Plan for Praia da Forte with Local Expertise

Praia da Forte at a glance

Less than 100km north of Salvador de Bahia will you find another one of the state’s coastal gems, a small, relaxed fishing village called Praia do Forte. This scenic, quaint coastal enclave takes its name from the defensive fort that was built on the beach by the Portuguese in 1556, and is now a popular retreat for those looking for some quintessential beach time. This white sandy beach, green fringes of palm trees and the blue waters of the Atlantic beyond it are the very essence of a tropical paradise, and the laid-back atmosphere of the area makes a welcome change from the energetic pace of Salvador, which is just two hours away by car. Often cited as one of the Brazilian northeast’s best beaches, Praia do Forte is a unique mix of seaside town and holiday destination, owing to the area’s many hotels and all inclusive resorts further inland, which are contrasted with smaller lodgings and pousadas closer to the beach. The beach itself is calm and tranquil, the waves breaking further out to sea where an offshore reefs calms the Atlantic waves before they hit the shore, allowing the shallow waters at the beaches’ edge to soak up the sun, creating a warm pool to bathe in.

    What not to miss

The Coconut Tree Coast, as this stretch of land is known, is also an ecological reserve that features a protected forest further inland, and a marsh where seabirds and caiman make their homes. Visit the Praia do Forte Cabo Frio Sea-Turtle Sanctuary, and at night you might be lucky enough to see females come in from the beach to lay their eggs in the sand, burying them with sand that they kick back with their flippers before heading back into the ocean. In the months between July and October you can see humpback whales on one of the many whale-watching tours that takes place in the area. Check out the Sapiranga Nature Reserve, a protected area in the Atlantic rainforest which you can hike and trek through, passing by idyllic waterfalls and rivers and spying some of the forest animals such as sloths, butterflies and snakes along the way. And of course, a trip to Praia do Forte wouldn’t be complete with a visit to the historic Garcia D’Ávila Castle, the fort from which the beach gets its name.
