Top Peru Hotels: La Casona, Cusco

It may be a contradiction in terms, but to us one of the most important parts of traveling is actually staying still – and the place in which you choose to do so is key. A good hotel is a haven where you can relax and recharge your energy before getting back out there to explore some more. This is especially true in Cusco, Peru, where the altitude dictates that you take it very easy for your first few days there, relaxing and giving yourself time to acclimate.

Highlighting one of our and our traveler’s favorite Peru hotel in Cusco,  it has to be boutique hotel La Casona.

View across the terracotta rooftops of Cusco´s historical center

La Casona, Cusco, is a beautifully converted colonial manor house on the cobble-stoned Plaza Nazarenas square, right there in Cusco´s atmospheric historic center. The hotel has bags of charm, and a great location within easy reach of Cusco´s main sights and museums. With just eleven rooms surrounding a central courtyard, La Casona is intimate but still manages to feel spacious. The mission of this Cusco hotel is to make guests feel as if they are visiting a good friend´s home – to this end there´s no reception desk and guests knock on the old, worn wooden door and are welcomed in. This set-up means that there is complete privacy, and the hotel is often favoured by the rich and famous for its discrete but attentive service (Mick Jagger was a recent guest!).

The delicious breakfast at La Casona

Each room is uniquely decorated with antiques and Peruvian artisan pieces, and while there are plenty of old-style features, the amenities are anything but, with under floor heating, sound-proofed windows and large, luxurious bathrooms filled with fluffy towels, heated rails and roll-top tubs for maximum comfort.

A roaring fire in one of La Casona´s guest rooms

All in all La Casona is a slickly run outfit with great food and a cozy vibe – little touches like an open fire in the lounge, a great collection of books and being able to tuck up in bed with a hot-water bottle each night help make it, in our opinion, one of the best hotels in Cusco.
